Ashley Murphy's Learning Journey
About Me
I teach US History and World History at Pelham High School. I have been a teacher for 9 years and am currently working on my Masters in Instructional Technology Applications K-12.
When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have been married to my husband for 17 years and we have three children. Treyce is 15, Makenzie is 12, and Tristen is 6. We enjoy traveling, kayaking, boating, and my family loves to fish (I enjoy watching them while I read).
Philosophy
School is something that I have always enjoyed, even as a child. I would "play school" with my cousins and I was always the teacher. Since becoming a "grown up" educator I have realized that education is something that is constantly changing. It is not the same as it was when I was growing up and it is not the same as it was when I began teaching 9 years ago.
I decided to pursue my masters degree to learn more about the digital education world. Since so much of the world has begun to go digital, I wanted to better acquaint myself with many of the resources that are available to educators. I was able to use some technology resources before the pandemic, but if the pandemic made me realize anything it was how ill equipped I truly was at incorporating technology in the classroom. When we came back to school and were on a hybrid schedule, it was necessary for me to adapt the way that I taught and connected to my students.
One of the challenges that I faced was finding the time to learn new facets of technology to be able to include it in my lessons. As educators, we are constantly inundated with lesson planning, data analysis, assessment prep, meetings, etc. Because we wear so many hats in the classroom and throughout the school it becomes overwhelming to try to add another task to our to do list. Learning new skills often takes the back burner to more pertinent tasks.
My goal is the ease the burden for teachers and help create lessons or troubleshoot problems that they have in their classrooms. I would love to work with small groups of educators to teach them how to use the technology that is available to them in our school system and find new resources that can be incorporated in their lessons.
Rationale
Our school system uses Google suite technology, so I decided to focus on the Google pathway. I felt that it would make me more effective in incorporating the resources that Google offers into my own classroom. I also believed that learning about these resources and being able to utilize them in the classroom would give me the benefit of being able to conduct more efficient professional learning opportunities for other educators.
